Happy Birthday To Me, Celebration

The weather did not permit grilled baby back ribs, unfortunately! It has been raining. At least it didn’t snow. But we placed the ribs in the oven, and had some roasted ribs instead with corn-on-a-cob! Yummy! We haven’t even touched the cake because we were so full…

Hubby did everything, from cooking to washing the dishes! And, he got me a really nice plant. I had to tell him not to go overboard when I told him I wanted a plant on my birthday. He does that – go overboard! When he and Matthew was out to get me that plant, I had to remind him again. In my imagination, he was going to get me a tree, and I will be really problematic if he did get me a tree.

It was a great day of lounging in the couch, watching movies, taking naps. Unfortunately, the nap time only goes for me and hubby alternately. Matthew didn’t nap at all, which is always bad during hubby’s day-off especially on my birthday, when we are looking forward to a nice hubby-and-me time. Sigh.

The day ended well, with me telling Matthew that we will continue mommy’s birthday the next day to eat the cake.

It’s not a maternity dress I’m wearing, but it’s a more forgiving dress for someone like me with a 33-weeks bulge in the belly.

Matthew Learns To Sing

Matthew's AgeMatthew

I had been teaching Matthew a few tunes, more nursery rhymes actually, since he was born! His little delay in speech dragged down our progress a a little bit. After a few Nursery Rhyme CDs, some preschool DVDs and a lot of hours in YouTube, Matthew finally memorized a few songs.

On our trip to Florida last summer, his Grandma got him this cool Elmo CD Player with some nursery rhymes CD. It has a built-in microphone on it and he’d sing to it. Unfortunately, holding the microphone he drags it around so most of the time, I tend to hide it from him. But the CDs work wonders. One of the CDs is actually a Lullaby CD that works on him at bedtime. He would ask to play it, he’d settle down, listen to it, sometimes sings with it and dozes off wonderfully most of the time anyway.

I had mentioned before that I got this Preschool DVD for him. It worked well to expand his vocabulary. But the thing that got his attention the most is the clips from YouTube! Because of YouTube, I now have to compete with him for computer time – him and YouTube and me and my blogging.

I filter the clips in YouTube for ‘nursery rhymes’, set it up to play Full Screen and then I leave him in front of the computer. He knows where to click and the ‘nursery rhymes’ clips would play for him one after the other. Sometimes, he does this for hours. We would start with ‘Hickory Dickory Dock’ and after a few minutes, he’ll be watching clips from Elmo. I have to admit that YouTube became more effective than me with teaching him songs. Sigh! I just make sure that the clips he’s watching will remain ‘nursery rhymes’ and not just wherever his clicking fingers would take him.

Need a Ride?

Yey to me! I just got my driver’s license driver’s learner’s permit! So I can start driving around now, of course accompanied by a licensed expereinced driver, and other restrictions. I have tried driving already, just hours after i got my permit.

I’m still a little bit disorganized at the road. Being used to driving at the other side of the road in Japan, I felt so conscious with which lane I’m supposed to be in, that I felt like I have to check and re-check the lanes to make sure, I’m not in the wrong one. And turning the signal lights take so much effort since I am used to doing it with my right hand. Now I have to do it with my left hand since the ‘control’ is at the let side of the steering wheel.

Next stop, get scheduled for a road test.

Also, hubby bought a golf cart, very useful to go around the campus. He is so happy about his new toy, and still so greedy to let me drive it. Which is ironic, because he lets me drive his car in the highway, but he’s so hesitant to let me drive the golf cart that only goes around 18mph at maximum. The summer school has ended and school starts again in less than 2-weeks, enough time to test drive his golf cart and get it ready for the next school year.

I have mentioned before that Matthew started driving his John Deere tractor. He has been more and more used to playing/driving his tractor. He still needs practice holding the steering wheel and make turns but he’s really having fun. However, to date, this has been the his most tiresome activity for me.

Seasons of Love

Enjoy a musical treat.

Excerpt from Lyrics:

In 525,600 minutes, how do you measure a year in a life?
In 525,600 moments so dear, how do you measure a year?
In daylights, in sunsets, in midnights, in cups of coffee
In inches, in miles, in laughter, in strife

In 525,600 minutes, journeys to plan
How do you measure the life of a woman or a man?
In truth that she learned, Or in times that he cried
In bridges he burned, Or the way that she died

It’s time now to sing out
Though the story never ends
Let’s celebrate,
Remember a year in the life of friends.

Remember the Love, measure in love
You know that love is a gift from up above
Share love, give love, spread love
Measure your life in love, in seasons of love

From the movie Rent(2005), based from the broadway musical. I personally like the movie and I would like to see the musical play. The setting is in Christmas 1989 in New York about the lives of starving artists who are struggling to pay their rent, when all they have are the films they’ve shot, screenplays and music they’ve written. Poverty, addiction and AIDS stricken, they measure their lives in love.

How do we measure life?

In daylights? In sunsets? In midnights? In days? Or weeks?
In inches? In miles? In travel miles? In place we’ve been and people from different places we’ve met?
In laughter? In friendships gained and regained? And holidays and shows that made us smile? Or the people we have pleased?
In strife? In bridges burned? In the number of enemies? Or jobs and stresses handled?
In truths learned? In the PhD’s earned? Or the truths learned from raising a child?
In times that he cried? In the number of heartbreak, or deaths?
In the way that she died? How about dying of AIDS, or breast cancer? How about childbirth? Or war?
How about love? In love shared, love given, love spread? In lives touched with love? In the people we love and those who truly love us.

I’ve visited so many entries on Heads or Tails: Love today. It seems like a lot of people are measuring their lives in love, as I try to do myself by focusing not on the opportunities I’ve missed, the PhD’s that I should’ve had, the trips I’ve never travelled or all my past heartaches and pains. My life is about love, the love I have for my family and friends, the motherly unconditional love I have for my child and all the love and care from all those who truly love me.

This is my HEADS or TAILS entry. For more details, visit the home of HEADS or TAILS.

American Idol

Do you watch American Idol? Who is your favorite idol?

I watch American Idol! I am so excited it’s back! I have too many favorites but my favorite performance is Bohemian Rhapsody by Constantine Maroulis. I have to admit it’s stage presence, the hair and the pouty lips.

ALOHA FRIDAY originated in Kailani’s An Island Life is becoming my favorite meme. If you would like to join in the fun, simply answer the question as a comment then visit Kailani’s An Island Life for more details. However, your answer and comments are welcome even if you do not want to participate.
