New Year 2014 in Georgia

New Year’s Eve, we are watching this pile of log burn … in Georgia.

New Year's Ever in Georg

New Year’s Ever in Georg

We spent New Year’s Holiday and Grandma’s birthday in Georgia. It was so cold and rainy… Brrrr

10 minutes on the road back to Florida, we still have hours and hours to go…

Mark, 3-years old: “Are we in Florida?”
Grandma: “Not yet.”
Mark: “Are we in China?”
Grandma, puzzled pause: “No.”
Mark: “Are we still in Georgia?”
Grandma: “Yes.”
Mark, disappointed: “Awww.”

Road trip is not his favorite thing.

Matthew’s Dating Plan

Last year, on Grandma’s birthday, Grandpa’s birthday gift for her was in a small box. We were all around her when she opened the small box, and it was a ring with a shiny gemstone. As soon as Matthew saw the ring, he said, “Ah, he went to Jared.” We all chuckled at this remark.

A year passed…

Last night at bed time, Matthew, 7-years old, came up to me,…

Matthew: “When I grow up and go to college, I’ll go to Jared and buy a ring, date a girl 5 times, and put the ring on the box and give it to her.

Me, after thinking hard: “First, you have to finish college, right? And then find a good job. And then find a nice girl.

Matthew: “Ok.”

He left, seemed satisfied and went to bed.

I was amused, but I wondered if he truly understands what he said. Probably not.

FYI, Jared is a jewelry store in the U.S. They have recurring commercials on TV with the tag line “He went to Jared.”

Obviously, their commercial has worked for Matthew. But, they should be paying us for the mere mention of their store in my timeline. HA!

While Uncle Tom was giving Matthew (7) a haircut, Mark was observing…

Me, to Mark (3): “Do you want a haircut too?
Mark: “No.
Me: “Why not?
Mark: “Because my hair is black, just like Daddy’s coffee.
Me: (speechless)

Only he can make that connection!

So Matthew have a playmate in the neighborhood, Shane. He is also from Matthew’s class in school. He comes over all the time to play with – mostly Matthew. But of course, Mark always wants to join in the fun, even if he couldn’t keep up with the 7-year olds …

So while Matthew and Shane were playing ‘tag’, running around the yard, completely ignoring Mark…

Mark, chasing Matthew around, “I want to play too, but I am not good with this game.”

Mark continues to chase Matthew, this time with pointer finger trying to tag Matthew, “TAG! AWEEE, MY FINGER HURT…”

Mark, while completely being ignored, continues to chase Matthew and Shane, and complaining about his finger. As I am amused by this, I called Mark to check his finger, which was fine, as I suspected. I told him to play with me instead. But he refused. And then he ran off, chased them again and completely ignoring me.

Lately, with my request, Matthew and Shane are better at including Mark when they play.

When he saw me with a camera in my hand, he stood still and asked me to take a picture of him. This was the outcome.

He is growing up so fast!

The boy who wants awesome

I was tutoring Matthew on his reading for his tests. As I listen to him read a series of sentences, on every pause, when he reads it correctly, I tell him “Very good!“. And then he said, “Mommy, next time, say awesome.” I admit I was really in a bit of a fog, that I really didn’t understand what he meant. I was about to ask him what he was talking about, but he continued reading, still correctly, and this time with more enthusiasm. And then he paused, looked at me, smiling, waiting. And then I got it… (duh!) And so I told him, “Awesome!” with more enthusiasm this time. And I can tell, he was pleased, as he was nodding when he continued on. Awesome! It got me off my fog!

Spring 2013

Such a crazy spring weather today! It’s freezing cold when the wind blows. It’s hot when the sun is out. The wind blows on and off. The sun is out and then gone. The weather just can’t make up its mind! And so, when we were out and about, on our flower-viewing today, we were dressed as if it’s Tacky day.

We boiled, dyed and decorated the eggs! They were hidden and found. And then, they were deviled, and topped with onion and bacon, for snacks.

Smart One, Monitor

Smart Mark

So I was asking Mark (turning-3) to help me with some chores, to put some of the clean rags to its designated drawer. He has done it before, so he can do it again.

Me: “Mark, put these rags to the drawer please.
Mark: “Wait a minute.
Me, in a firm commanding voice: “No ‘Wait a minute’! Do it right now.
Mark, still not moving: “Ok. Wait a second.

Me, speechless.

Baby Monitor

Baby Monitor

First published in Facebook, March 25:

It’s the 1st day of Matthew’s one-week long spring break from school. Early this morning, while I was already awake in my bed but still resisting to get up, Matthew and Mark were talking in their room and I overheard them over the baby monitor.

Mark: “Brother, wake up! It’s morning time!
Matthew: “No. Today is my day off.

I love this baby monitor! It’s a gold mine for precious funny lines between the two of them!

(I’ve started using this baby monitor, on and off, since Matthew was born. Yes, I still use it even though Matthew is now 6 and Mark is turning-3. And I intend to continue using it until they are teenagers!)

Michael Clayton

I’m not a fan of George Clooney and his movies. I don’t find him good looking, sexy or whatever they describe him. With regards to his movies, I only liked Oceans Eleven Series because of Brad Pitt and Matt Damon and Three Kings because of Mark Walberg.

Although, I think George Clooney is a good actor, his movies like Syriana, Solaris, Good Night and Good Luck, way too boring serious for me that it was so difficult to keep myself from dozing off while watching these movies.

But, Michael Clayton was not difficult to watch and I’m not disappointed that I saw it.The story is engaging and interesting. The movie is very well acted by the major casts, Tom Wilkinson, Tilda Swinton and Clooney included.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)Johnny Depp as Sweeney Todd can act … and sing at the same time! This movie is definitely well made – well acted, well directed and well produced – not a cheap movie to make. However, the story is too dark, and gory for my taste.

I have not seen or heard of the musical play that this movie is based from. I find the story line predictable! I kind’a knew early on how the story will go and how it’ll end.

Throughout the movie, I was kind’a waiting for Harry Potter and his gang to save the day. The dark feel, the gothic look of the movie made it look like it’s one of the Harry Portters movies. And three of the prominent characters of Harry Potter are in this movie, too.

Warning: Movie Spoilers Ahead

My most favorite part of this movie is the part when the child Toby played by Ed Sanders, warned Mrs. Lovett played by Helena Bonham Carter, that Sweeney Todd is a bad person – a demon. He then thanks her for her kindness and for taking him in. He swore to her that he will protect her. Mrs. Lovett then assures him that everything is alright and she too swears to him that she will protect him. The exchange between Mrs. Lovett and Toby of these lyrics is tantalizing.

Nothing’s gonna harm you, not while I’m around.

Nothing’s gonna hurt you, not while I’m around.

The melody of the song, and the lyrics of assurance and of good intentions could certainly pass as a lullaby. Except that, after they were singing, Mrs. Lovett locked Toby in her cellar, which almost looked like a dungeon, where all the ground human-meat and left-over skeletons were.

The Brave One

The Brave One (2007)There is no doubt that Jodie Foster and Terence Howard can act.

I think the story is engaging … and shocking. I give it plus points for acting performance, powerful theme and unexpected ending. But the ending is also the movie’s unforgivable flaw.

Warning: Movie Spoilers Ahead

The way the lead character, Erika Bain played by Foster, can shoot a gun just like that, with no hesitation, no chit-chat – is really … SHOCKING! I mean, this is unlike other shooting movies where there are more hide-and-seek and chit-chats first before finally shooting each other.
