My question for this week’s Aloha Friday is inspired by the Binibining Pilipinas (Miss Philippines) Pageant that happened in the Philippines last week. I still have negative feelings with its results. I know I have to get over this. [Read more]
Anyway, …
Have you ever participated in a beauty pageant? Do you watch beauty pageants?
Since I was young, I like watching beauty pageants. Pageants are entertaining! But I never had any aspirations in joining one. I am not tall and my beauty is not the pageanty kind
. However, I have a lot of times been involved with coordinating and organizing school or community pageants or helping out a candidate, back in my high-school and college days(1991-2000). My pageanty friends know that I can do hair and makeup, so I had been asked a few times to help out backstage. They also find me helpful with their speeches. I wrote a few speeches for them. I coached them how to say their memorized speeches, while I do their hair and make-up.
I have witnessed something at the backstage, that is totally different from the glamour that the audience see. While some pageants were fun and in the spirit of good competition, others were vicious, where the audience do not have a clue that between the smiles and hugs and kisses and holding hands between the candidates on stage, there are bickering, name-calling and sabotage-attempts backstage. Too much drama, I know.
One of my most unforgettable experiences backstage is a fight I have witnessed between a candidate and her drunk boyfriend, who disapproved her makeup and her sexy outfit. So ridiculous!
Aloha Friday originated in Kailani’s An Island Life is becoming my favorite meme. If you would like to join in the fun, simply answer the question as a comment then visit Kailani’s An Island Life for more details. However, your answer and comments are welcome even if you do not want to participate.

I’ve watched them occasionally but have never had any desire to participate or have my kids participate.
Well I have spent over a year of the last 2 years in the Philippines. The problem is that most people have a VERY small grasp on English, hardly anyone speaks it at home but the media is trying to make all the shows in English because they want to seem as a part of the world. . And many of them talk just like her. She was not able to clarify the questions. I knew right away that she just did not understand the question. When you go to the malls there it is the same. Spend a day there with a video camera and you would have 100 videos like this. Hmmm maybe that is a good you tube idea.

I was in one when I was about 5-6 years old. It was just a small county pageant and I think I won 2nd place. But I have never thought of putting Emma in one….there is too much pressure and competition these days!
I never participated in one but my sister did. Actually, we didn’t even apply for it but they asked her to join.
Anyway, I used to watch it but not anymore. My tivo is full of other shows that are more interesting.
I’ve never had the body to do anything like that- and up here in the midwest pagaents aren’t very common, but I was always involved in theatre and loved that!
Steph
I’ve never entered any pageants myself, but when I was younger I would watch the Miss USA and Miss America Pageants and root for our states Gal. I remember it being a family affair and all of us sitting in front of the tv.
I have never participated in a pageant but I used to watch them on TV all the time. No so much anymore though.
Nope, I’ve never been one, but my daughter was. I love to watch pageants.
no and no. not because i’m against them or anything. i just haven’t had the opportunity.
Yes, I have been in a Beauty Pageant and accepted in another, but didn’t compete. Getting sponsorship is not easy! I was in Miss Teen Greater Grand Rapids. I was 18, had just graduated high school. It was a great experience. I learned how to walk and turn like a Beauty Queen!
Oh, yes! I grew up watching Beauty Pageants and wanted to either be Golden Dreams Barbie or Miss America when I grew up! *giggle*
Nope, never have participated in one. I used to watch them every year on tv when I was a kid, but haven’t in quite a while.
I was in a 4H beauty pageant thing when I was in 4th grade. I thin I won like 2nd place but it wasn’t my thing. I liked playing basketball better.
I don’t really watch the beauty pageants on tv, but then again I don’t watch much of anything anymore.
hahaha! nice post. ilove th part about the backstage drama. so true!
i love watching beauty pageants, but have never been in one. i hosted a charity beauty constest for a filcom group in meguro 2 weeks ago though. it was fun, but uber-stressful.
Thanks for stopping by Coffee break!!
I havent been in a pagent I had thought about entering my daughter. I actually took her to try out for modeling/commerical thing but left halfway through once I seen the attitudes of the children that were “veterns”. The parents attitudes were bad but the childrens were much worse! I decided right there to never subject my child to that again!!!
Hi Charlotte
I love watching beauty pageants but never participate in one. Never had the desire to participate in one, have nothing against them – i think beauty pageants are great especially with the emphasis of a beauty queen to be an ambassador of their state/ country..’.helps make the gap continents closer’ ‘ dont you think?
I’ve never participated in one but when I was younger, I enjoyed watching Ms. Universe.
