A Good Scare
The movie channels are infested with scary movies this weekend and probably it will go on until Halloween is over. I am not really into scary movies. I try to avoid scary movies most of the time. I find these kinds of movies psychologically disturbing, damaging! However, the mood for these movies strike sometimes that I could appreciate a good scare.
The scariest, most disturbing movie that I have seen so far is the Devil’s Advocate (1997) by Keanu Reeves and Al Pacino. I’ve seen this in big screen when it came out! A few days after watching the movie, I couldn’t concentrate during the day just thinking about it. I had sleepless night because of it. When I did sleep, I had nightmares. There was too much blasphemy in this movie especially the lines delivered by Al Pacino. It really shocked me and it still gives me the creeps.
Another scary, disturbing movie is Butterfly Effect (2004) by Ashton Kutcher. It’s about a young man who can revisit events in his childhood consequently changes everything! He tries over and over, to make everything right, but he finds things worse than it used to be. What disturbs me specifically is the alternate ending in which he watches a home video of his birth. He concentrates on killing himself when he was still inside his mother’s womb. Imagine a human fetus struggles to pull his own umbilical cord to tighten it around his neck! It’s just disturbing!
Hostel (2005) is quite disturbing too! It’s about two american backpacking in Europe. They are just loking for fun that they were lured to a remote area where everything is for sale, including violence. They become victims of torture performed by well paying individuals. The child’s gang in this movie is disturbingly original! They were just children but in exchange for candies and lollipops, they are willing to stone or strike people to death! The scariest thing about this movie is that supposedly this movie is inspired by true events!
The Wicker Man (2006) by Nicholas Cage is a remake. The twist in the end is unexpected, especially for me, who hasn’t seen the original movie. According to reviews, the original is a lot better, scarier. Well, I’ll take their word for that. Having seen the remake is enough for me.
The Haunting (1999) movie is about a group of insomniac volunteer research subjects travel to an old mansion to undergo testing for what they believe to be study on sleeping disorder, but the research is actually about human fear. The house is haunted by children who died in the house, the woman who tried to protect these children and the man who killed all of them. In this movie, the haunted house is scary enough.
There are those Japanese inspired movies like The Ring Series, The Grudge 1&2 and others that are well received as effectively scary. The reviews are more than enough reason for me not to watch them … yet!

I also avoid scary movies… but, I love “The Others”
You should try the Stephen King series..hee hee. Rose Red, Misery, The Shining..that was really disturbing because it plays with the human mind. Then there’s also 1408 by John Cusack.
I don’t like scary movies too. I watch it without sounds. Maki loves it so before, we would watch it together with headsets..and I don’t put on mine!
BTW, I do not categorize Butterfly Effect to be scary. I liked that movie actually though it’s a little bit dragging.
Jap horror movies? No, never I would not even try! I watched Dark Water (nihongo version) and had nightmares too.
Hi Charlotte. Thanks for visiting my blog. I like watching scary movies. The ironic thing is that my imagination works overtime after watching one and end up having a hard time sleeping.
Hi C–those are some scary movies. I generally avoid scary movies and as you said, “I find these kinds of movies psychologically disturbing, damaging!”
